ZABŌ — an old word for a stillness of mind

Zabō () is a phrase from the ancient philosopher Zhuangzi: to quiet the mind until the line between self and world dissolves.

We named our atelier after it. When you dip a cloth and watch it rise green, then turn — slowly, in the open air — into blue, the city falls silent. There is only your hand, the water, and the living indigo.

That stillness is what we dye into every piece. Not just a colour. A moment of 坐忘.

The Living Vat — 天然灰汁発酵建て

Our indigo is .

Most "indigo" today is chemical, dyed cold in minutes. Ours is a living fermentation, tended like sourdough — fed, warmed, and read by eye every day. It is the old way, tennen-aku hakkō-date, and it is the only way we dye.

蒅 — the composted leaf

SUKUMO

We build our vats on sukumo: indigo leaves composted and fermented for around a hundred days into a deep, earthy black — the country's finest raw indigo, and the heart of every colour we make.

灰汁で建てる — raised with lye

HAI-AKU HAKKŌ

Wood-ash lye, slaked lime, wheat bran, and pure Hokkaido groundwater. No chemicals. Over days the vat wakes, ferments, and blooms a coppery foam on its surface — , the indigo flower, the sign that the vat is alive.

重ねる — dip, breathe, repeat

KASANE

Cloth lifts from the vat green, then turns blue as it meets the air. One dip is a pale sky. Twenty dips is a midnight navy. Depth is never printed — it is earned, one breath of oxygen at a time.

Japan never called it just "blue."

A single indigo vat holds a whole spectrum. Each depth earned its own name, centuries ago — from the palest glance into the vat, to the deepest navy of all. Hover a shade to steep this page in it.

The Maker — 藍染坐忘

A dream, sixteen years
in the making.

For sixteen years, our founder Kenji Orii stood at the dyer's vat, learning to read a living indigo by its scent, its foam, its temperature. In September 2013, he opened a workshop of his own in Sapporo, so that more people could touch this thousand-year-old craft.

Today, thirty-two hands work the vats under one roof. We do three things: we teach the dyeing (), we make the pieces (), and we reimagine indigo for the next generation ().

Everything begins with Hokkaido's water, and the patience of a vat that cannot be rushed.
